Ivor Wynne Stadium The Home Of the Tiger Cats Ivor Wynne Stadium was originally known as the Civic Stadium. The it was built for the British Empire Games in 1930. In 1959, the stadiums seating capacity was increased by fifteen thousand with the construction of a new grandstand, many facility changes were made at this time. On December 9, 1970, it was decided that Civic Stadium would be renamed to Ivor Wynne Stadium in honour of the man who had made many contributions to the Parks Board, Mc Master University, and the local and national sports. In 1971 another major renovation took place which saw the construction of the north stands. During this same renovation Ivor Wynne Stadium became the first facility in Canada to have an artificial turf playing surface. The installation of this turf was made possible by the fundraising of the Hamilton Junior Chamber of Commerce. In 1986, a new press box was installed, as well as accessible seating and ticket booths. The Stadium is the site of the annual Hall of Fame Game, where former Canadian Football League greats are honoured with induction into the CFL hall of fame. In 1996 the stadium was spruced up and given two grandstands of temporary seating as it was the host of the Grey Cup game, the CFL's championship contest. The Hamilton Tiger-Cat Football Club calls Ivor Wynne Stadium Stadium their home. Thousands of football fans have witnessed moments of Tiger-Cat triumph and agony from the bleachers of the facility. Visiting football teams regard Ivor Wynne one of the most difficult Stadiums to play in because of its enthusiastic fans (many of whom are residents of ward 3) and the fact that the seats come down to only a few feet away from the sidelines.
